Subject: Hi! It's Matt from the Wine Party :)
Hi M... it's Matt - I was Mike's helper in the wine classes - we spoke at the End Of Class party.
How are you?
I noticed your email address on one of Mikes mass mailings and just wanted to say hi.
How have you been?
Did you do anything fun this past weekend?
I spent some time cleaning out the garage, met some friends for dinner at Nina's (every been there?), and went to the hockey game Sunday.
I know you are a huge fan... did you get to see it? We were doing so well, and then things fell apart in the third period and we lost in overtime. :(
How is work going this morning? What do you do for a living?
I'm a software engineer in Cary for a large company... it's pretty fun work, though I can't wait for the holiday vacation. :)
What are you up to this week?
I enjoyed talking at the party and was going to see if you might like to meet for a glass of wine sometime.
Let me know if you're interested... it would be fun to catch up. I had to leave the wine party early, as the girl I was with was meeting her boyfriend later that evening (she's just a good friend of mine) and I'd like to hear how the rest of the evening went.
Hope you are doing well!
-Matt

Hello, Matt.
I am actually rather bored at work lately. I write proposals for an educational testing company which contracts with state departments of education to develop and score their statewide assessments. But I don't have any proposals to work on right now, so I am occupying myself with solitaire, holiday plans, thinking about Christmas presents & cards, working on a few newsletters, and pondering what my sign will say for the next Canes game in my pack.
Sunday's game was not in my miniplan, nor unfortunately was it on TV. I could have seen it in person with Instructor Mike, but as Mike seems to have dubious intentions with regard to me, I didn't think that would go over too well with my boyfriend. I did listen to the game on the radio, though. Sadly, I can't say the outcome surprised me, as the early single goal is like a death sentence for the Canes. All it was missing was Tripp Tracy mentioning "Kevin Weekes hasn't had a shutout since...." to drive the nail into the coffin.
As for wine, I doubt it any time soon. I have several errands to accomplish this week and several events this weekend. Will possibly hit the Cool Bars tour Thursday though.

Hi M... how's your day going? Are you tearing up the solitaire game? :)

How long have you been working there?
> But I don't have any proposals to work on right now, so I am occupying myself with solitaire, holiday plans,
What have you got planned for the Holidays? I have family coming down from NY (I'm from NY, but have lived here 20 years now). Where are you from?
> thinking about Christmas presents & cards, working on a few newsletters, and pondering what my sign will say for the next Canes game in my pack.
Excellent... which game are you going to next? Did you get two tickets or just one with your pack?
> Sadly, I can't say the outcome surprised me, as the early single goal is like a death sentence for the Canes. All it was missing was Tripp Tracy mentioning "Kevin Weekes hasn't had a shutout since...." to drive the nail into the coffin.
That does seem to be the case, doesn't it?
> As for wine, I doubt it any time soon. I have several errands to accomplish this week and several events this weekend.
No problem.... just a thought though, have you got any plans for this Thursday night's game? Petrhaps we can meet at a sports bar and watch it somewhere.
> Will possibly hit the Cool Bars tour Thursday though.
What's the cool bars tour?
Talk to you later

I have been working here for 9.5 years full-time plus another 1.5 years as a reader before that.
I'm not sure what I'll be doing over the holidays other than caring for my neighbor's cats and going to the New Year's game with my boyfriend.
My boyfriend is from somewhere near Jamestown, NY; is that near your family? I have been in Raleigh for 30 years but was born in Pennsylvania.
We got six seats of a miniplan with some friends. I think our next game is Floriduh. If I don't go to the Cool Bars tour on Thursday (a Hurricanes promotional event), I will likely watch the game with my boyfriend.

Wow... that's a long time at one job. Where did you go to school?

Sounds like fun... how many cats?
> My boyfriend is from somewhere near Jamestown, NY; is that near your family?
No... I was born in NYC.

That's amazing... you don't even look 30 years old... how old are you? I'm 37.

I didn't realize you and your boyfriend were so close... I guess I just assumed it was pretty casual since you came to the Wine Party alone. Have you been going out long?
If things ever don't work out and you want to get together... let me know – you seemed nice, have a beautiful face, and an incredible body, and I'd enjoy going out sometime.
Talk to you later

It's just that you only talked to me for like 5 minutes at the wine party, you know I have a boyfriend, and yet you are still corresponding with me, which you seem to do at the same time I get emails from Mike. I don't want to sound rude, or egotistical; I just find that somewhat odd.

Do you not have any friends that are male?

This is true, but I heard that you were asking about the girl I was with, so I only assumed that you were interested
Sorry for the confusion.

You sure do assume a lot. Maybe I was interested in the girl you were with.
And you also heard I had a boyfriend. Just because he wasn't at the wine party doesn't mean we're not serious. (The girl you were with had a boyfriend who wasn't at the party either.)
To answer your other email, yes, I have several male friends. I took the class with my friend Mark because my boyfriend doesn't drink wine. I could have assumed you only wanted to be friends, but..... I would have been wrong. You did say something along the lines of "if you ever lose the boyfriend, and you want to get together" and something about my "incredible body." While that is somewhat flattering, it sounds a lot like you want to be more than friends, so it does lead me to wonder why you emailed again.

Excellent point. :)

Yes... however she had an escort, me. :)

Yes... Prior to finding out you had a serious boyfriend, I was definitely interested in more. Now that I see you are involved, I was thinking friends would be good in the event that things didn't work out with the current guy. Are you guys pretty serious?
Were you attracted to me at all? If you didn't have a boyfriend, would you have agreed to a date?
Aren't you just the slightest bit intrigued by someone who only met you for 5 minutes, but was so interested that he has persured things this far?
Hope you have a great day!
-Matt
PS - Just curious...
How old are you?
Do you work out at a gym?
Are you interested in having kids one day?

Subject: RE: Hi there
I have to admit, you are persistant.
I think it's kind of seedy and dishonest for you to be hanging around me pretending to be my friend, all the while waiting for an opportunity to pounce on me when my boyfriend isn't looking. Perhaps I am unfairly prejudiced, given the number of times this has happened to me in the past. I could be polite and friendly, and you could pretend to be friendly, but eventually you will want more, and I will not, and I will feel bad for having hurt your feelings, and then I will get mad because you will rage on me for leading you on, when in fact I have clearly indicated I don't want anything more. Not only will I have to feel bad and spend days and perhaps years wondering if I was that rotten a person to have hurt you thus, though unintentionally, but also I will suddenly find myself without the friend that I thought I had, and I will feel betrayed too.
So let me make this clear, Matt. Frankly, I don't think it's any of your business how "serious" I am with my boyfriend, as the mere mention of him is pretty much a tacit indication that I am not interested. If I HAD been interested, I would be leary, by now, of your impertinent questions and comments about my age and body. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure I even remember you. I THINK you were the guy I briefly discussed hockey with and then your female friend wanted to leave. If that's right, I wasn't talking to you because I was interested in a potential romantic involvement; I was just trying to be social, which normally is difficult for me, being an introvert, and there happened to be a hockey game on that night, (i.e. something for me to talk about with the room full of virtual strangers).
You have no idea how ironic it is that I am having to defend myself for being "too nice" for once. Apparently, I should stick with being aloof and unapproachable. I'm sure this email tips me over to the "bitch" side, but I don't mean to be. I'm trying to save us both a lot of trouble. I am not interested in you romantically, sexually, or in any other way, other than to be curious about what in god's name I could have said or done in the five minutes I talked to you that so intrigued you.

Man. He was trying to run some serious game on you. He thought you were a HB10 then tried to play the PUA role but wound up being an AFC. LOL!! That was AWESOME!! You set him straight...I just got one question for you. "So, how are things working out with you and your boyfriend? ;)"

I swear I know this guy.
ReplyDeleteNot to take this dude's side (he's a schlub), but he did sort-of ask, in a half-assed sort of way, if you wanted to go out in the first email. I can see him seeing your initial response as interest. I sort of feel sorry for him.
